This winter, our WT Bears completed a successful athletic season, with new school records, personal bests, and history-making participation numbers.

Both the Boys and Girls Basketball teams performed strongly, both advancing to the district WPIAL playoffs. The Boys team put up a fight, playing in the quarterfinals against Sewickley Academy, finishing third in the district. Undefeated in their section, the Girls team advanced to the WPIAL championship final, held at the Petersen Event Center in Oakland. Despite a tough battle against Neshannock, the girls finished second in the district. Both teams qualified to compete in the PIAA state championships. Through the season, three players hit the 1,000 career point milestone: Michael Hammerling ‘26, Jasmine Hollins ‘27, and DaShae Cochran ‘26. Our Crew athletes continued to compete, both locally and virtually, against rowers from across the country. The team saw standout performances from Lila Burns ‘29 at the USRowing Indoor National Championship/Pittsburgh Indoor Sprints and Oliver Jacobs ‘29 North Allegheny Erg in the Burgh Championship.

The Indoor Track & Field team sent multiple Bears to the TSTCA Championships and brought home medals. Currie Bigham ‘28 and Abby Weinstein ‘26 finished second and third in the 3000m, respectively. Weinstein also finished fourth in the 1600m. Joshua Matthews ‘26, Otis Pascal ‘28, Ayan Ganesh ‘28, and Jack Iyer ‘27 finished third in the 4x800m relay. Alexis Bansah ‘27 and Abby Weinstein ‘26 went on to compete in the PTFCA State Indoor Championships and New Balance Nationals, where Bansah placed seventh in the girls triple jump.

For the first time in program history, our Girls and Boys Fencing teams competed both as teams and individually. Both teams advanced to the PIFA playoffs, where the girls placed third, and the boys placed fourth. Cheyenne Mitchell ‘26 competed individually and earned a bronze medal.

The Squash team hit a new record with 42 students participating across the program. They continued to improve their skills, competing against local and regional opponents, and finished their season with a dominant 15-1 final against Steel City Squash.

Finally, our WT Swimmers delivered stronger performances this winter. At her fourth consecutive WPIAL Championship, Thea Siegel ‘26 took home first in the 50m freestyle and 100m freestyle, and went on to the PIAA State Championships, where she placed second in the 50m freestyle and third in the 100m freestyle. Neil Mangan ‘29 showed strong performances in both the 200m individual medley and 500m freestyle at WPIALs, qualifying him for the PIAA state championships, where he placed 16th in the 500 freestyle. Noah Hopkinson ‘29 competed for his home district, Penn Trafford, and gained new personal bests in the 200m freestyle, 50m freestyle, and 100m backstroke.
