More About The Week Ahead - Sept 2-7WT Girls Tennis beats Valley 4-1
The Winchester Thurston tennis team defeated Valley HS 4-1 in a AA non-section match on Tuesday. The Bears were led by singles wins from Freshman Fiona Kamin and Junior Co-Captain Marann Buckanovich, as well as doubles victories by the tandems of Senior Co-Captain Elena Clarke with Freshman Hannah Albert and Sophomore Raghad Hassan with Junior Lucy Bair. Freshman Anya Mahtani fell in a tough third set super-tiebreak at #3 singles. Winchester Thurston is now 3-0 versus AA competition and 3-1 overall.

In our first section match, the girls soccer team beat Apollo Ridge 4-0. Goal scorers included senior Marghe Memoli (2 goals, her 3rd and 4th of the season), sophomore Avi Keller (1 goal, her first) and sophomore Jessie Kaufmann (1 goal, her first). Jessie also assisted on two goals from the left midfield wing. Senior Nora Coen Pirani assisted on the other two goals from the other side at right midfield wing. Overall WT had 21 shots on goal compared to Apollo Ridge's 3 shots on goal. A great cap to the game was that every healthy player on the roster got playing minutes and another clean sheet by the goalie tandem of senior Maeve Dever and sophomore Jasmine Hollins. The team is now 2-0

The girls soccer team had a tough opponent with the 3A Oakland Catholic team but came out victorious 2-0. Both goals were scored by senior Marghe Memoli, a breakaway goal at 31:50 (assisted by Jessie Kauffman) in the first half, and another quickly after from the top of the 18 yard box at 28:19 in the first half. The second half was all about the spectacular play in goal by senior Maeve Dever. Overall she made 14 saves and kept a clean sheet. Getting their first Varsity starts were freshman Nancy Cao, playing fullback and sophomore Derya Tonguz, also playing fullback. Others who have moved into starting roles include seniors Song Esgalhado, Emily Tea and sophomore Jessie Kaufmann.

The Boys Upper School Soccer Team had a good showing at the Pine Richland Tournament this past weekend. Although we lost both game, we were playing up in class and played 2 competitive games See an interview with Coach Brownold after the game Sunday here

In a battle between 2023 AAA WPIAL playoff qualifier Moon and 2023 AA playoff qualifier Winchester Thurston, Moon prevailed by a score of 3-2. The WT Bears were led by wins from #2 Singles Junior Marann Buckanovich and the #2 doubles tandem of Junior Lucy Bair and Sophomore Raghad Hassan. The Bears begin AA section play next week

Girls Varsity SoccerWT Girls Soccer came away last night with a decisive 6-0 win against section rivals, Ellis, at Graham Field! The Bears were led with a hat trick from senior, Marghe Memoli (attaining her 7th goal of the year so far), a goal from senior, Nora Coen-Pirani, a goal from sophmore, Jessie Kaufmann, and concluded with a goal from sophmore, Avi Keller. We are on the road next week with another section game on Monday battling GCC's Centurions and a JV match against Moon the following day.

CoEd Middle School Cross CountryMiddle School Cross Country started the year off with a blast with Boys placing 3rd overall and Girls 2nd overall.7th grader Atticus Mingo took 1st by a long shot, while on the girls side three finished in the top 15!Great job to each and every MSXC student athlete!

Girls Varsity SoccerIn a battle with one of our section competitors, Springdale, the Bears ultimately lost 4-0. Although we lost, we picked our heads up, and pulled it together in the second half to keep that half scoreless. We will see them again later in the season and hope to come back stronger!
