On Wednesday, Nov 6, our middle school program participated in a middle school scrimmage against boats from Central Catholic, North Allegheny, Fox Chapel, and Three Rivers Rowing Association.   Our men’s quad of Cohen Crossley, Andrew Pawlowski, Teddy Glass, and Theo Downs battled with the eight from Central up the 1000m course and finished second overall, while the eight (including Lucas Fronzaglio, Hendrik Sukumvanich, Nathan Jones, Biel Badenes, and Bella LaFace) battled with the 8 from NA and finished 4th overall.  A total of 7 boats competed.

Crew with another big day at Head of the Occoquan Regatta

This past weekend Winchester Crew student-athletes traveled to Fairfax, VA to compete in the Head of the Occoquan Regatta where they raced a challenging windy course against competitive crews from the Mid-Atlantic region. Ben Hocquet raced in a single and finished 11th out of 16 boats.  He also raced in a quad along with Marcio Silva that finished 15th out of 19.Sophie Clendenning-Kim also raced in a single and finished 17th out of 25 boats.  She also raced a double and finished 18th out of 21.Fynn Henning raced in a double that finished 14th out of 27.  He also raced in a quad that finished 13th out of 19.John Malone was in the same double event finished 16th out of 27.  He also raced in a men's quad that finished 9th out of 19.Andrew Pawlowski raced a double in the high school event and finished 22nd out of 27.  He also teamed up with Teddy Glass and Sophie Clendinning-Kim to race a mixed quad and finished 11th out of 12.&nb

This past weekend was a very competitive race with thousands of entries and a very challenging course.  All of the athletes represented well both on and off the water.  Below are the results from the weekend.  Effie Grelli raced in a high school novice single event and finished 6th out of 13 boatsCohen Crossley and Andrew Pawloswki raced in a men's high school novice double and finished 12th out of 14.Sophie Clendenning-Kim teamed up with another SCRC athlete to race in the women's high school novice double, finishing 20th out of 24 boats.John Malone raced in a men's quad with other team members and finished 27th out 39 boatsMaya Finke, Effie Grelli, Nora Jacobson raced in a women's JV quad finishing 17th out of 18.John Malone also raced in a men's varsity double finishing 43 out of 53Fynn Henning and Ben Hocquet teamed up to race a men's JV double finishing 33 out of 44Maya Finke also raced in a women's JV double and finished 23rd out of 30 boats.&nb

Lower School XC Enjoys success

Our Lower School XC team had an exciting 2024 season! Our youngest running Bears in grades 2-5 competed in 5 races, all part of the East End XC Series. They came home with 10 trophies, and 26 individual medals.Our 2nd and 3rd grade boys team earned 3rd place overall in the Novice division of East End Championship Series. Our 4th and 5th grade boys earned 3rd place overall in the JV division of the series. Derrick Wilson came in 1st place overall in all 5 races this season.

Another Shutout for Girls Soccer Against GCC

The Bears fought hard for another section win last Monday evening against Greensburg Central Catholic, with a final score of 6-0. Senior, Marghe Memoli, had her second hat trick of the season assisted by freshman, Nancy Cao (1), and sophomore Jessie Kaufmann (2). The other three goals were scored by sophomore Avi Keller (assisted by Derya Tonguz), sophomore Jessie Kaufmann (assisted by Marghe Memoli), and sophomore Matilda Yang (assisted by senior Nora Coen-Pirani). The defense and senior keeper, Maeve Dever, kept the Centurions out of their goal keeping a clean sheet for the game.  Next week, the Bears take on Apollo-Ridge at Graham Field, so come out and support your team on Monday, September 23rd at 3:30 for another hopeful section win for the season!

We all had a blast at the WT tailgate on September 28th, and had an even better time in our 2-0 win against Freedom at CMU. On Monday, WT girls played Riverview (currently 2nd place in our section) and came out with a decisive 3-0 win. This was a vital win on our road to playoffs and seedings for that post-season time. WT Girls played Ellis on Monday, October 14th and left with another shut out to finish their last section game of the season. Goal were scored by senior Nora Coen-Pirani and sophomore, Matilda Yang (both assisted by sophpmore Avi Keller).This win cemented the girls 2nd place finish in their section for the season and are excited to see what the post-season brings.

WT Girls had their last game before playoffs against OLSH. It is always exciting when these two teams meet and WT came away with the win with a final score 1-0. The single goal was scored by senior, Marghe Memoli (assisted by sophpmore Avi Keller) with 6 minutes left of regular time. Senior keeper, Maeve Dever, had multiple impressive saves to add another clean sheet to her record, effectively shutting out the Chargers.  Playoffs begin next week and the Girls were seeded in 6th place. They are scheduled to play Chartiers-Houston (11th) at 8:00pm on Tuesday, October 22nd at Avonworth High School. Please come and show your support!

Congratulations to both of Winchester Thurston tandems in today's WPIAL Section Doubles Tournament. The pair of Junior Co-Captain Marann Buckanovich and Freshman Fiona Kamin reached the finals before falling to Oakland Catholic, while the duo of Senior Co-Captain Elena Clark and Freshman Hannah Albert attained the semifinals before losing to South Park in the third-place match!! Fiona and Marann qualified for next week's WPIAL Doubles Tournament.

On Tuesday the 17th, the WT girls tennis played a non-section match against AAA team Gateway. It was a close match, with freshman Anya Mahtani playing three sets and a tiebreaker and doubles team Lucy Bair and Raghad Hassan winning 6-4 4-6 6-3. WT has now won nine out of eleven matches! Go bears!

WT Girls Soccer came away last night with a decisive 6-0 win against section rivals, Ellis, at Graham Field!  The Bears were led with a hat trick from senior, Marghe Memoli (attaining her 7th goal of the year so far), a goal from senior, Nora Coen-Pirani, a goal from sophmore, Jessie Kaufmann, and concluded with a goal from sophmore, Avi Keller.  We are on the road next week with another section game on Monday battling GCC's Centurions and a JV match against Moon the following day.

In a battle with one of our section competitors, Springdale, the Bears ultimately lost 4-0. Although we lost, we picked our heads up, and pulled it together in the second half to keep that half scoreless. We will see them again later in the season and hope to come back stronger!
